In December 2008 I tested positive for a BRCA mutation which means that I was given an 87% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and a 40% risk of developing ovarian cancer. I decided to undergo risk- reducing surgeries in order to drop my risk of those cancers to less than 4%.
In February of 2009 I underwent a prophylactic hysterectomy and ovary removal. In April I chose to have a preventative double mastectomy with reconstruction.
In December of the same year, I started a hereditary cancer support group which has since grown to be the largest global support group of its kind
In October 2014 I launched a local support group for women dealing with hereditary cancers.
I now dedicate my time to educating the public about the risks of such cancers. I am available for interviews and public speaking.
It’s amazing what we can do when we come together.
The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.
